Eastbourne Rugby Club were presented their Sussex Division One trophy by England legend Jason Leonard at the Brighton Metropole Hotel on Saturday.

The World Cup winner was the guest speaker at the awards nigth, which handed out trophies to all teams who achieved promotion in Sussex.

Eastbourne, the highest ranked side at the event, were given their trophy after a fine season which saw them take the Sussex Division One league title at a canter in the end.

After losing just once and drawing twice all season, they finished 10 points in front of runners-up Burgess Hill, amassing a massive points difference of 511.

Chairman Fraser Books said, “It was a great night. We were delighted to pick up the trophy and he (Leonard) is an absolute legend.

“He was absolutely hilarious. He is a guy who started in the amateur era which is what we are. Some of the stories he told were amazing.”

Preparation is already underway as Eastbourne gear up for life in the London Leagues.

It represents a big step up but Brooks says the side are targeting more success and believes they are ready the step up in class.

“In truth, I want to win it. Winning is addictive,” he added.

“Scoring 85 points every week is no good. We need to be tested. We are going to be up against teams who play quick rugby like us so we need to be defensively strong.

“And we need to be fit. Some of our players are in pre-season training already.”

The club will hosts their own awards ceremony on “Ladies Night” this Saturday. Individual awards will be handed out to the stars of the season, while they look forward to the arrival of the Webb Ellis Trophy and a big screen which will air England’s World Cup matches.
