Royal Eastbourne Golf Club narrowly missed out on a place in the Sussex County Knock-out Exclusive Cup final after an agonising defeat to Ifield.
Following a first-round bye, the Royal benefited from home draws against Boars Head, from which they progressed by virtue of a 4-0 win, and Mid Sussex, which they won 3 1/2 to 1/2. A 3-1 quarter-final victory over Haywards Heath put the Royal through to the semi-final, where there met Ifield.
First pair out, Frank Horner and Derek Lodge, edged home 1 up to raise hopes for the Royal, and when Martin Hughes and Dave Morris won by the same narrow margin, one more point from the last two matches would have sealed things.
However, the pendulum swung the other way when John Chamberlen and David Blackburn lost, meaning the outcome of the Mickey Wishart/Chris Ayling pairing was vital.
This pair stood on the 18th tee all square but, after some wayward shots into the bunker from both teams, the second Ifield player greened his third leaving a putt of some 10-15 feet, which he duly holed to give Ifield the vital point and the match.
Over 60 ladies took part in the Bovill Trophy at The Royal Eastbourne Golf Club last week.
The popular winner was Past Captain, Wendy Goodman (handicap 25), with 146 net. Lyn Sweetman (27) was second with 147 net and Sue Weldon (23) came third with 148 net.
