Royal Eastbourne golfers Ben Clarke and Jack Edwards were selected to play their first full county match in the annual tri-angular under-13 event against Kent and Surrey at Eltham Warren Golf Club.

Paired together in the morning foursomes played over nine holes, they duly beat Kent 4 & 3, but narrowly lost to Surrey on the final green.

Following a good lunch the teams prepared for a further 18 holes singles match play. Ben notched up a convincing 6 & 5 win against the Kent lad, and in another tight match against Surrey it was again Ben who would secure the win on the 18th green. Jack’s afternoon singles results were a 2 and 1 win v Kent and 2 up win against Surrey, very nearly holing his tee shot on the par 3 18th, leaving a tap in birdie in front of the crowd.

Both boys played very well against tough opposition, each winning 3 out of a possible 4 points for Sussex, who would eventually finish the day in second place behind Surrey.

Jack was to continue the good form displayed at Eltham Warren, to shoot a fine round of 82 (nett 63) at Cooden Beach GC to win their junior open and earn him a significant reduction in handicap. Jack received the Trophy from the captain of Cooden Beach Golf Club Martin Dix.
