Eastbourne Rowing Club’s Joe Guppy will take on the world’s best after he gained Team GB selection for the 2013 Youth Olympics in Australia.

Joe, 19, completed the gruelling assessment against the top rowers in the country last November in Boston, Lincolnshire. Joe’s competition included some of those who participated in the London Olympics.

Following a gruelling assessment, Joe, 19, was chosen for three events; men’s coxless pairs, men’s coxless fours and men’s coxed eight.

Bob Noakes, club chairman, said, “Joe has shown a high level of commitment and application to reach his goal.Eastbourne extends its thanks to those that have helped Joe along the way.”

The young athletes fly to Sydney on January 5 to race on the same water where Sir Steve Redgrave won his fifth Olympic gold medal in the 2000 Olympics.

Bob Noakes added, “All of this benefits his home club as Joe gives as much of his time as possible in coaching and progressing our crews.”
