After, what was a successful year for the Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club they have started 2013 much like 2012 with an overall third place in this year’s East Sussex Cross Country League through the woods at Pett Level.
A relatively small team contested in what was some extreme wet weather conditions but were able to hang on to their third place with a strong finish, with the highlight being Ed Hickman-Casey who led the field home, closely followed by Richard Jones in 4th, Ed Dodd in 7th and Alan Rolfe in 10th.
When the final placing’s were taken into account, the Ed double act finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the overall series with Richard sandwiching in between them to take 3rd.Mylene Schuwey was Eastbourne’s highest placed lady on the final day, and yet another strong performance secured her 2nd place overall in the Senior Ladies category, with Emily Jones taking third.
Brian Slaughter was also competing in the British Masters Pentathlon which ran alongside the area championships at Lee Valley, and he lowered the Men’s over 55 British Record which stands now at 3765, after a steady series of events throughout the day, culminating in a breath-taking run in the 1000 metres of 3.08.03.
His other events on the day consisted of a 1.45 High Jump, 5.10 Long Jump, 10.79 Shot, and 10 dead in the 60 metre hurdles, although the time was rounded down quite considerably after the electronic timing failed.
