Eastbourne Rugby Club head into their toughest sequence of matches since arriving in Sussex One on the back of what coach Mal Chumbley described as their ‘best performance yet’.
While the next two weeks will be tough for the Blue and Golds as they face fellow high-flyers Chichester III and Burgess Hill, they couldn’t have asked for better preparation than the stunning 61-3 victory they recorded over Hove III last weekend.
Scoring nine tries and conceding none, it was the perfect performance from the side that now perch at the peak of the Sussex Spitfire One table.
Coach Chumbley said, “That was our best performance of the season so far.
“It was a complete, all-round display. Every player contributed to the win and it was a really strong performance that delivered exactly what we work on in training.
“It was particularly pleasing because we’re not relying on individuals. On Saturday, for each of our tries there were about two or three players who could have scored them.
“There’s a fantastic work ethic and motivation from each and every one of them.”
This weekend, Eastbourne host a Chichester side who, up until last weekend, were also unbeaten in the league anc challenging for the top spot in the Sussex Spitfire One - a status that Eastbourne currently enjoy.
Chumbley said, “The top four teams all face each other over the next two weeks and that will potentially have quite a big say in the final standings.
“We’re happy with the timing of these meetings though because we’re on a roll.
“Coming down from the London leagues, we’re already a scalp but now that we’ve won five out of five, top of the table and winning by clear margins week in week out, that scalp becomes more attractive.
“We relish that though and we’re ready for the challenge.”
