Polegate sailor and aspiring Olympian Nicola Boniface will be competing for gold against the UK’s most talented youth sailors at the 2011 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships.
More than 335 of the country’s finest youth dinghy and windsurf racers, and for the first time competitors from International waters, will greet the shores of Hayling Island for five days between Monday (April 11) and Friday (April 15). Boniface will have the chance to be crowned RYA Volvo Youth National Champion and earn the opportunity to be selected for RYA Volvo Team GBR the British Sailing team for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship 2011.
Boniface, last year’s Spitfire 2010 RYA Volvo Youth National Champion, will look to defend her crown and gain selection into RYA Volvo Team GBR. She narrowly missed out on a medal at last year’s ISAF Youth World Championships in Turkey by finishing fourth. Along with fellow crew member, Rupert White, the impressive twosome will be hot contenders at this year’s RYA Volvo Youth National Championships and event victory could be possible for the Spitfire duo. Boniface will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of previous big name RYA Volvo Youth National Champions which include three-time Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie, Beijing 2008 Angling gold medal winners Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson and Skandia Team GBR’s double World Champion 470 helm Nic Asher.
As always the event doubles up as a selection event for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships 2011, which this year take place in Zadar, Croatia in July.
Paul Goodison, Olympic gold medallist and former World, European and British Champion and Annie Lush, current Women’s Match Racing World Champion, will be making special appearances to support the young sailors towards the end of the week.
