Following the success of last year’s event, the 35th Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy will again take place at Devonshire Park.
The event will run alongside the AEGON International on Thursday June 16 and Friday June 17 2011 starting at 11am each day.
The match dates back to 1973 and sees Great Britain take on the USA in an 18 and under girls event providing competition between the best players of these two countries.
The teams are made up of four players and their respective team captains. Last year a strong British team featuring Laura Robson and Heather Watson narrowly lost out to the USA so the Brits will be looking for victory this year.
The match was established by The Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation and Mrs Frank Jeffett 20 years after Connolly won all four Grand Slams.
It will comprise 12 matches with eight singles and four doubles matches played over the course of the two days. All singles matches will be best of three sets with a tie break in the final set, while the doubles matches will be two sets with a match tie break.
The match will be played over two courts with the singles matches played in the morning and the doubles following in the afternoon. The reverse singles and doubles matches will be played on the second day.
Simon Jones, LTA Head of Performance Support said, “We are delighted that the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy will again be held at Devonshire Park during the AEGON International.
“We believe the tie is an excellent opportunity for our younger players to experience playing at a top level event supported by enthusiastic crowds. It is the best grass-court preparation ahead of the ITF Grade 1 in Roehampton and of course The Junior Championships at Wimbledon.
“I am looking forward to welcoming the team from the United States and those travelling from the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation, and am excited be a part of this event once more.”
