A much-needed win for Eastbourne Hockey Club came at the perfect time as they now prepare to face local rivals and league leaders Brighton on a confidence high.
The victory, which came away to Oxford Hawks courtesy of an Ali Barnes brace, was their first since January, 12 and was one made all the more valuable by the fact two of the three teams below them in the Premier Division also pocketed three points.
Manager David Adelston said, “It was about time we won! The lads played really well and put in an amazing amount of effort. Oxford are a much more experienced side than us but we played exceptionally well.
“As we found out last week, the difficult thing is closing games out but to do that on Saturday was very encouraging.”
Now, though, Eastbourne must topple table-topping Brighton and Hove if they’re to notch back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Adelston added, “It will be a very tough game because Brighton are flying at the moment. Our draw with them was a long time ago now and we’ve learnt a lot since then, but it all depends on the day.
“Playing Brighton is as close to a local derby as we get down here. It will be a non-stop, very exciting game and we’ll try to dig our heels in for a result.”
Match will get underway at Beresford Astroturf, 11:45am.
