Laughton ‘virtual leaders’ after whitewash

Eastbourne Borough A and Willingdon A are tied at the top of Division One after convincing victories at the weekend.

Eastbourne A saw off Eastbourne C by 9-1 with Lisa Standen recording the only success for the C team. Rose Rainton and Rob Warner took easy maximums for their team to secure the comfortable win.

Willingdon recorded an 8-2 win over Eastbourne Borough E thanks to maximums from Sam Collins and Sheila King, with Peter Goad making the only success for Borough E.

Following their whitewash victory over Willingdon B, Laughton are virtual leaders of Division One as they sit third but with two games in hand. Tony Catt, Faldie Adams and Bob Lowe won all 10 sets in three games straight, except for one when Alan Hooker managed to take one game against Tony. Elsewhere, Hailsham A narrowly beat Ministries A 6-4, Eastbourne Boro’ D lost to Eastbourne Boro’ B 7 -3, with Kevin Bignell going to deuce in 5 of his 12 games. Even against Andy Summers, who achieved a maximum, he had two deuces.

In Divisions 3/4, Cavendish A recorded a whitewash win over Eastbourne Borough F - Sam Jack, Ryan Gregory and Ed Stokes consolidating the position for Cavendish A at the top of Division Three, although Ryan Warner almost spoilt the clean sweep by taking two sets to five games against Ryan Gregory and Ed Stokes. No player was unbeaten as Polegate C lost out to Polegate A 7-3. Gavin Brown stopped maximums for both Paul Wilson and Peter Bowers but he in turn was beaten in a very close set by Graham Sheppard, who was then beaten by Dave Chumbley. Hailsham C took the honours in another interclub match as they beat Hailsham B 7-3 to keep them top of Division Four. Dave Axell, Dave Hazelden and Melvin Meltz took full advantage of the B team being a player short, each of them taking one set and winning the doubles.

In Divisions 4/5, Keiran Reffell recorded a fine maximum as Polegate C saw off Bishopstone C 6-4.

In Divisions 5/6, Polegate D beat Polegate E by 8-2, although the match was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Bishopstone D lost to Bishopstone C by the same result after losing the fifth game in three of the first four sets. David Coleman saved four set points in a close struggle against Richard Amos. Ministries C showed no mercy as they beat Ministries D 10-0, with maximums from Francis Bates, Brian Knights and John Card. The C team now top Division Five, while D team struggle at the foot of Division Six.
