Ladies work hard for sixth place finish

The combined Hailsham/Eastbourne Rovers athletics team represented Sussex in the finals.

The competition proved a tough event, especially for the men, who were without their injured talisman Brian Slaughter.

It was the ladies who worked so hard to gain sixth spot with a mix of great teamwork and individual performances.

Jane Barlow finished 5th in the 800m over-35s and secured first place in the Walk.

Lesley Underdown was fifth in the long jump while Di Farmer had a busy day as she finished fifth in the 400m, third in the 800m, fourh in the 15,000m over-50s and came second in the triple jump.

Third in the 3000m was Julie Chicken, as she was in the walk. She also came fifth in the 800m, fourth in 400m and fifth in the JT.

Annette Freakes finished fifth in the 3000m while Liz Brandon and Angela Morgan took on the throws. Liz was fifth in the hammer, fourth in the SP and third in the JT.

Angela was first in the hammer, second in the JT and third in the dicuss.

The Men’s team worked hard with Norman Harris, Bob Semark and Dave Mercer gaining valuable points for the team.

Dace Coulson got fifth place in the 800m, Gary Judges worked hard to achieve third in the 1500m, while Andy Ruffel was fifth in the 3000m Walk.

Team captain Ian Turner was fifth in the JT. Pride of place was the evergreen Bob Sumson who got first place on his last throw in the JT over-60s and fifth in SP.
