Ladies meet their match in Vivienne Trophy

Eastbourne Ladies well and truly met their match when they played the Wealden Ladies in the fourth round of the Vivienne Trophy.

Playing at home the previously high scoring rink of Elizabeth Jones, Annie Jackson, Rosemary Burgin and Pat Nicholls failed to make a good start and were behind 3-12 after ten ends, Playing better in the second half they finally lost 15-21.

Also at home Ann Colbran, Joan Mortlock, Stella Stuttard and Jean Finch, started well but dropped two fives on the eighth and tenth ends to trail 8-13 after ten ends.

With one end to play the scores were level at 19 all. Wealden got the winning shot on the last end to win 19-20.

Playing on the Wealden green Vera Gearing, Gill Henty, Gill Basford and Edna Harris were unable to get in to the game and were losing after ten ends by 20 shots to nil, finally losing 43-2.

The one successful rink in the match was Doreen Hughes, Sandra Dossett, Kay Shaw and Mo Spring who all played well to lead 8-6 after ten ends and finished strongly to record a fine win 26-16.

Final Score Eastbourne 62 Wealden 100.

Eastbourne’s Opponents in the Egham Trophy were Egerton Park IBC in what was expected to be a very close match.

Playing away Beth Clarke, Sheila Simmons, Brian Henty and David Booth had a brilliant tussle against Kevin Carries team, 9-15 down after ten ends they fought back to lead 26-24 going into the last end where they dropped two shots to earn a very good draw 26 all.

Also at the Bexhill venue was Pat White, Renee Baker, Peter Morgan and Stephen Bain who all played well throughout. They led 10-4 after ten ends and came home with a fine win 21-13.

At home were Sheila Morris, Pat Bain, Ray Novis and Ian Coombes who led 11-8 after ten ends and went on to win 25-20.

Also at home were Jen Baulcombe, Gill Lower, Peter Reynolds and Bill Fuller. After a good first five ends when they led 10-4 they were pegged back to be only two ahead after ten ends 12-10, putting in a strong burst of scoring from the thirteenth end scoring 3,4,2,1,2 to lead 27-11 then going on to win 30-15.

Final Score Eastbourne 102 Egerton Park 74. Eastboune’s next opponents will be Arun IBC of Bognor Regis.

In the National over 60 Pairs an all Eastbourne clash saw Peter Reynolds and Derek Dyer play Roger Cable and Bill Fuller.

With Roger battling with a knee injury Peter and Derek were too good on the day leading 28-8 after fifteen ends Roger and Bill then conceded the game.

In the National Men’s Fours Brian Beare, Ray Novis Ian Coombes and Bill Fuller played a very strong four from Adur skipped by John Godfrey. Losing 7-10 after ten ends they fought back to be level after twenty ends, in the final shootout Arun scored the vital shot to go home with a 21-20 win.
