Eastbourne’s Johanna Konta will not get a chance to represent the town in the main draw after being ousted in a second round qualifier to Elena Vesnina.
The British number five got off to a fantastic start, breaking Vesnina’s opening serve. However, her success did not last long as she dropped the first set 3-6.
From there, it was easy work for the world number 82 as she raced to a 6-2 lead in the second set to seal a place in the qualifying third round.
It ended Konta’s hopes of reaching the main draw at the AEGON International after a win against British number six Naomi Broady in the first round of qualifying yesterday.
Australian-born Konta, who lives in Eastbourne and is ranked at number 214 in the world, was challenging to be the first local player in the main draw of the tournament.
Now, after her early exit, she will be heading to Wimbledon where she’s also been handed a wildcard entry.
