Eastbourne tennis player Johanna Konta advanced into the second round of the US Open after a straight sets victory at Flushing Meadows.
Konta, ranked 203 in the world, despatched her highly-rated Hungarian opponent Timea Babos 6-4, 7-5 in 107 minutes in front of a few die-hard fans on court 15 on Tuesday.
Babos is considered a rising star in the game and has shot up the rankings to 59. She has one of the fastest serves in the women’s draw which Konta did well to contain.
Konta was born in Sydney, to Hungarian parents and took-up British citizenship in May and resides in Eastbourne.
Konta will face Olga Govortsova of Belarus in round two.
