Junior tennis stars given chance to shine

Young tennis stars showcased their talent during the half term with a friendly match between Meads Lawn Tennis @ ROMPA and Hampden Park Juniors.

It was the first time in history that Meads Lawn Tennis @ ROMPA had formed a junior team and it proved a great success as they took on their counterparts on the town’s courts.

Inspired by Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic dazzling the crowds at the 02 Arena last week for the ATP World Tour Finals, the youngsters displayed great enthusiasm and skill in a mixture of singles and doubles contests.

The match took place at Meads but it was the visitors who triumphed, using their experience to just edge the win.

Nina Liebenberg, Callum Camille, Cosmin Mititelu and brothers Aaron and Aidan Brown all provided important victories for Hampden Park Juniors throughout the morning but Meads’ Daniel Thomas, Joel Lock and Tristan Ledger amassed sufficient points to ensure the host’s pride was left in-tact.

Once play had finished, a brilliant buffer was provided by the parents in the clubhouse to round off a fantastic day for all.

Ollie Milner, Head Coach at Meads Lawn Tennis, said, “It’s just a wonderful sight to see all the courts full at the club, especially at the end of October.

“I’m very proud of my team. They don’t compete very often and many of the matches could have swung either way, so they have all done extremely well,”

The reverse fixture is due to take place at Hampden Park next year in what will no doubt be another day filled with good fun and good spirit.

Elsewhere, the town’s ‘Tennis in the Park’ scheme picked up the ‘Park Club of the Year’ honour at the Lawn Tennis Association Awards last week,
