The second of this season’s East Sussex Cross Country league meetings was held at New Place Farm in Framfield, near Uckfield, and Hailsham Harriers saw 19 of their runners competing for team and individual points in this series of six events.
Overnight frost had hardened the ground but out came the sun, which subsequently saw temperatures rise and soften the fields to produce a wonderfully soggy mud course over five miles with little grip even for those with spikes.
To the delight of the Harriers squad, Gary Judges took the overall win from Peter Woodward (Crowborough Runners) by 15 seconds. In the ladies event incorporated into this race, Alissa Ellis continued her excellent form from last week at Lancing by taking another well-deserved win from Helen Sider (Lewes AC) by a massive 46 seconds.
Other Harriers provided great support and finishing in the top fifty places were Paul Eccles in 21st, Graham Purdey in 26th and Giles Bowmer in 34th. Despite the great team effort, the overall points scoring saw Harriers place third from the ten teams taking part in the race. However, after two events this series, the club is still second behind current leaders Lewes AC.
The team’s individual places and times were as follows:
1st Gary Judges 30m15s, 21st Paul Eccles 43m42s, 26th Graham Purdey 35m03s, 31st (1st lady) Alissa Ellis 35m39s, 34th Giles Bowmer 35m51s, 52nd Tom Clewley 36m59s, 56th Dave Mercer 37m37s, 62nd Ivor Rumsey 38m01s, 79th Dan Ellis 39m03s, 114th Brian Winn 41m40s, 115th Sam Alvarez 41m40s, 126th Peter Drake 42m13s, 130th Helen O’Sullivan 42m59s, 137th Audrey Haddon 43m28s, 141st Julie Chicken 43m52s, 158th Nicholas Brewer 45m17s, 180th Catherine Brewer 48m27s,,181st Norman Harris 48m31s, 199th Nina Rumsey 52m18s.
In the preceding junior race, excellent runs were produced by Poppy Ellis, who finished in 4th (1st girl) with Erin Wright 6th (3rd girl). The next round will be held after Christmas at Firle.
