Eastbourne-based Brighton University boxers won all of their bouts to reach the finals of the British University Championships in Sheffield.
Alexandra ‘Frosty’ Frost beat her opponent in a replay of the English series, defeating her in the second round. She now faces a Bath University student in the finals.
Coach Adam Haniver said, “We wanted Frosty to go out and box, not steam roller which she did last time. The really pleasing part of this display is she did exactly that. Frosty put her shots together well, scoring regularly with the right hand but was not trying to drive the shots in. She is now 3 for 3 and progressing very well.”
Club Captain Amber Withers beat Amy Shipley from Northumberland University by landing strong hits in the early rounds and will face Alex Collins from Portsmouth University next Saturday.
The fighters will compete in the finals held at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield on the 23rd February.
Middleweight Lee ‘Jenko’ Jenkins had a walkover to the final and will compete against Loughborough Universities’ James McKeown.
A horrible twist of fate saw Brighton University club mates Adrianne ‘Pheebs’ Phebey and Lucy ‘Zip’ Kent drawn against one another. Both boxers decided not fight each other and it went to a coin toss to decide who would progress. Kent guessed correctly and will compete against Judith Unterlass of Northumberland University in the final. The club’s last competitor Max Wicks floored Roberts from the University of West England in the first round and Wicks won the contest with a majority decision.Haniver said, “It was a cracking lead hook to the body by Max. He will now face a highly rated Jack Langford from Sheffield Hallam University in the final. We are now 17 bouts, 15 wins this season and the Brighton Juggernaut hopes to roll on two weeks and bring back the golds.”
