Five birdies on first five holes helps Royal Russell to title

Royal Eastbourne’s Sam Russell was crowned the Southern Co. MOT Centre Eastbourne Amateur Golf champion last weekend.

Held at the Royal in superb conditions, Russell made a blistering start of five birdies on the first five holes to help card an opening round of six-under-par.

Playing in the final group of this 36-hole scratch event, Sam finished with 72 after a four at the last for a final total of 137. It was good enough to take the title by five shots ahead of Willingdon’s Oliver Hayes who shot 69,73 for a total 142. Mark Taylor of the Royal was third with a second round 66, the best round of the afternoon.

There were morning and afternoon prizes for the best gross and net scores, these going to the Royal’s Alex Piper, 66, and Nick Ward,70.

The winners of the handicap prizes were all members of the Royal, Mickey Wishart, who had 138 taking the 36 hole prize, Geoff Campbell and Darren Moon winning morning and afternoon.

Royal Club captain Jerry Cowell thanked Southern Co. MOT Centre for the generous prize fund.

More than 40 golfers turned out for this year’s President’s Putter at Eastbourne Golfing Park

Club Captain Chris Elphick took the title with 44 points from Phil Quelch and Jack Prosser.

Ladies section winner, Sarah Quinn, amassed an amazing 44 points. Cindy Wotton returned 38 to come second.

Longest Drives Men: 4th hole: Richie Stoddern. 12th: Tye Townsend. Longest Drive Ladies: Cindy Wotton.

Nearest pin men: Lee Sunshine on the second with Tye Townsend taking the 6th. Wayne Funnel was closest on the 9th. Nearest the pins for the Ladies: Sarah Quinn won the second ladies captain, Chris Gocher won the sixth.

August Stableford: 44 seniors played in this month’s Stableford. Only eight returned points in the 40s.

Acting captain, Chris Mottershead, Pete Byiers and Dave Wright achieved 43 with Chris declared the winner ahead of Dave Wright. Pete Byiers won nearest the pin on the 2nd.

Tim Kaye got the 6th and Jim Cummings was a whisker away from a hole in one on the 9th. Don Lait won nearest the pin in two on the 4th. Steve Lynch returned a tidy 42 and Geoff Summerfield, Brian Thompson and Brian Finch returned 41s. Derek Button had a nice 39 as did Geoff Fordham.

Eastbourne Downs Claret Jug Division 1: Gary Reid (10) had an excellent round of 62 in the mild conditions followed by Downs regular Rod Pullen (9)with a 68, Andy Morelan(9) was third with 69.

Division 2: Borough Trophy winner Warren Poll(13) had another excellent result on 69 with Thomas Hendrie(16) second on 70 with young Cameron Browne(14) continuing his excellent season on 71.

Division 3: 1st Mr Mick Browne 84-17=67 2nd Mr Keith Woodrow 89-20=69 3rd Mr Grahame Berry 94-21=73

Seniors August Medal: Division 1:Won by Tony Warren(14) with an excellent 65 to pip Brian Powell(15) on 66, Mike Smith(13) was third on 70 Division 2: Bernard Russell(28) lead on 71 with David Hunter (22)on 74 and Robert Murray (19) 0n 76.
