A strong Eastbourne Downs team narrowly lost this Optimus Trophy clash against Singing Hills on the 18th green last weekend.
The Downs came in after the morning foursomes at two points a- piece and the singles were going well with club champion Will Fairbairn out first and winning 2&1 for his second point of the day.
Shaun Harrison, Will’s morning partner, also won and “A” team debutant Scott Simpson took the 17th and 18th holes to win his match 1-up to secure his second win of the day.
The Downs were only a point away from an unlikely away win as the away team would progress if the match halved.
However, losses for Ian Moon, Barry Wooller, Nigel Smith and Phil Manser saw it all hinged on Roger Geering’s match.
Roger, who had already won in the foursomes, needed to win the 18th hole for victory.
All the players gathered around the 18th green and watched as Roger’s 10-foot birdie putt for the match slipped agonisingly past the hole. It left his opponent with a five-footer for the half that he duly rolled in for a 6.5-5.5 victory. Meanwhile, the Spring Cup was won by 10-handicapper Graham Deacon with an excellent 66 in windy conditions. Chris Dalton, playing off 11, was second on 68.
The Seniors Centenary Cup was won by Richard Collier on 38 points from Mike Smith on 35
Junior Stableford 1st: Louie Highfield 48 points
2nd: Samuel Smith 38 points; 3rd: Jake Nash 29 points.
