Paul Eccles had to fend off early challengers in the 5,000m to win the first of the 2013 series of the Track Championships.

With Gary Judges unavailable, Eccles was harried by David Perry in the early stages and a close group consisting of Olivia Webb, Martin Bell Craig Edkins Graham Purdye and Huw Jones.

The 12 laps saw a relentless pace from all these front runners with the best battle from Bell, Edkins, Purdye and Jones.

But Eccles stormed away to take a convincing win in 18minutes 52seconds and Perry took a great second place 46 seconds in arrears. Olivia Webb took the ladies race from Alissa Ellis with Julie Chicken third.

Meanwhile, Sue Fry had an excellent win in the ladies section of the The Horsham 10K road race. Fry powered home in 38 minutes 59 seconds.
