Determined Derek gets off to a flyer in the nationals

Eastbourne’s Men have enjoyed some success in the early rounds of the National Championships.

In the singles Derek Dyer played a home tie against Steve Flynn of Grattons IBC and steadily built up a good lead at ten ends 13-4 and went on to win 21-14.

Together with Peter Reynolds, Derek travelled to Grattons for the Pairs against Ron Adams and Tony Grainger.

With both of them playing well they led 13-4 at ten ends. After 18 ends when they led 23-9 the game was conceded to them.

In the Triples, Ray Novis, Adrian Wainwright and Billy Fuller played J Smith, Steve Ireland and Dave Overs.

With all three home players in top form they ran out winners 25-12 after 15 ends when the visitors conceded the game.

In the over 60’s Pairs Peter Reynolds and Derek Dyer played John Godfrey and Basil Holding from Adur.

In a close-fought game they trailed 7-10 after ten ends then having a good run they went on to record a fine win 18-15.

In the Over 60’s double rink The “A” side were drawn against Adur IBC “A” where the home team had a last end disaster dropping seven shots.

After ten ends Glynn Burton, Ted Seagers, Jim Preston and Billy Fuller only trailed 6-8, by only scoring five shots over the last eleven ends and conceding 19 saw the game slip away to the visitors side skipped by Roy Sedgwick.

Travelling away Dave Bain, Ken Hook, Dave Booth and Peter Jackson all played really well.

After ten ends the were in front 14-4 and came home with a fine 24-13 win. Final Score 35 - 42.

The Ladies have also got off to a good start in the early rounds of their Nationals.

In the Champion of Champions, Sue Taylor has got through the first two rounds. Playing at Horsham against Jan Puffett Sue was 18-14 down and three shots down with only one bowl to play when she fired the Jack off the rink, then went on to win 21-18.

In the second round at home Sue played Jean Bracey of Preston IBC 9-2 down in the early stages she fought back to lead 14-13 eventually going on to win 21-13. Sue’s next opponent will be international bowler Lorraine Khuler of Adur IBC.

In the Pairs, Ann Summers and Pat Bain played T Durrant & R Hambrook at Preston Playing steadily they led 13-7 after ten ends going on to win 26-8.

In the Mason Trophy Eastbourne Ladies “B” played Horsham “A”. At home were Pauline Nash, Judy White, Gill Hill & Pat Bain in a close fought game Pat’s team lost 17-13.Playing away, Pat White, Pauline Davies, Ann Summers and Cora White recorded a fine 27-14 win,
