It seems Eastbourne Rugby Club can overcome any hurdle that is thrown their way this season.
Faced with the challenge of last-minute squad changes due to illness and personal situations, the Blue and Golds still managed to ease to victory against a good Hayward’s Heath outfit.
The visitors claimed the first and last tries of the afternoon but Eastbourne grabbed every one in between to chalk up the pleasing 39-12 victory.
First team coach Mal Chumbley said, “We had a fair bit of disruption pre-match but you just have to deal with these things. At this level, rugby doesn’t compete wih family and personal problems and illnesses.
“We had to shuffle our squad about a little bit but those that came in definitely rose to the challenge.
“We settled into our game quite quickly and started strongly, which was really pleasing.
“We took control against a good Hayward’s Heath side. They’re a very young, mobile side who were defensively robust so I think everyone was satisfied with the eventual result.”
This weekend, Eastbourne travel to rivals Seaford, who lie four places below the Blue and Golds at sixth in the Sussex Spitifre One table (2.30pm).
Chumbley said, “It’ll be a nice local match. They started well but have picked up a couple of defeats recently.
“When these teams have played in the past, there’s always been quite a fierce rivalry but we will just focus on our game and head into it with optimism, as we always do.”
