Eastbourne Eagles skipper Cameron Woodward believes a special bond between the riders can help them claim Elite League glory in 2012.

Woodward captained the side last season as they fell just short of the league title. But the Australian feels this year the same riders, with the addition of Russian international Denis Gizatullion can go one better.

“We are all best of pals and hopefully Denis will join in with the rest of us and get that good feeling going. There are five of us all living in Polegate together. So there is a good healthy rivalry but very friendly.

“We have a lot of talent in this side. Joonas (Kylmakorpi) will lead the way at number one but there are a whole host of riders, myself included, who are willing and want to step up to that number one spot.”

I have seven meets under my belt from the winter in Aussie so I’m good and ready to go. In a way I’m better prepared. I have a tried out a few things, there are still things I need to work on but it’s all good.”

The Eagles will only contest the league this year as they missed out on a place in the Knockout Cup due to their proposed European commitments. However, the Euro League failed to resolve a TV dispute, the league failed to materialise and the Eagles missed the registration deadline for the Knock-out Cup.

Woodward added, “That was a disappointment for us but it’s all about the league this year. We are still a bit bitter about last year, we came so close but the team (Poole) won it in the end.

I think Poole and Coventry will be strong this year but we are ready and will give it go.”

The Eastbourne Eagles begin their 2012 Elite League campaign on Saturday March 24 against Belle Vue at Arlington Stadium (flags up 7.30pm).
