The top three seeded women have all been knocked out today at the AEGON International.

America’s Christina McHale caused the third major upset by beating Caroline Wozniacki, after Petra Kvitova’s and Agnieszka Radwanska’s earlier exits.

Wozniacki, who first graced Devonshire Park at 14, was world No. 1 in October 2010 but was far from her best in the first set. The Dane could only win one game as McHale took it 6-1.

Wozniacki, with partner Rory McIroy watching on, came out fighting in the second and was 6-2 up in a tie break before McHale won the next four points.

However, third-seed Wozniacki stayed calm and, after McHale fell at 6-6, claimed the tie break 9-7 to take the set 7-6.

McHale, 20, is tipped as a future force of American tennis and is a definite threat in this year’s tournament. She claimed a tense third set 6-4, despite Wozniacki saving three match points.
