Matt's header ensures second place for Borough

A second half goal from Matt Crabb earned Eastbourne Borough a deserved 1-1 draw at Newport County this afternoon.

Crabb headed a home a Pat Harding cross in the 64th minute to ensure second place in the Blue Square South League.

As expected Lewes took the title with a 2-0 home win against Dorchester to extend their lead over Borough to six points.

But a draw in South Wales was a commendable display by a still weakened Eastbourne lineup against a team bidding strongly for the play-offs.

Lee Gurney put the home side ahead in the 27th minute, the Newport striker cutting inside and scoring with an angled drive that went in off the post.

After a disappointing first half, Borough looked much livelier after the interval and deserved to get on level terms.

But it needed a couple of fine Hook saves towards the end to keep Borough, despite their injury and suspension problems, unbeaten in three games.

Eastbourne Town had an unhappy final home game at the Saffrons, crashing 5-2 to high-riding Metropolitan Police.

Despite going ahead through Liam Baitup early on, Town were outplayed by a much more direct Police team who were leading 3-1 at the interval.

Any hopes Town might have had of a fightback disappeared in the opening five minutes of the second half when the Police scored twice.

A second Town goal came in late in the game through 16-year-old sub Callum Hollis who had only been on the field a couple of minutes. He netted from an angle on the right following a fine ball from the left by Gary Brockwell.

Town were unlucky to lose both Terry Cooper and Simon Catt in the first half with injuries.

There was better news from the County League division one where Hailsham Town beat Sidley United 1-0 on Friday night thanks to a goal by Steve Monk.
