Saffrons semi-final clash with local rivals Lewes
EASTBOURNE Hockey Club have the chance to salvage some success from their season with a semi-final cup clash against Lewes Men’s 1s this weekend.
Eastbourne eased through round one of the Sussex Men’s 1s cup with a 9-1 victory over Mid Sussex Men’s 1s back in September 2011.
They now face Division Two side Lewes in the semi-final at 3pm on Saturday at the Saffrons.
Manager David Adelston said, “It will be a hard local match. They always used to be higher than us in the leagues but in recent times we have been getting the better of them, although the matches have always been very close.
“We won’t have the pressure of picking up league points so it should be good fun.”
If Eastbourne progress they will face either Chichester Priory Park Men’s 1s or Brighton and Hove Men’s 1s in the final to be played on April 29.
“It would be tough to face either of those sides. I think these four teams are the best sides in Sussex, it just depends who’s better on the day.”
Adelston’s team have had a two-week break from competitive action allowing them to be refreshed ahead of the local derby.
Even still, Adelston plans to introduce some of his second team youngsters into the mix, to give them a taste of first team hockey.
Eastbourne are currently awaiting the result of the three-way relegation play-off in the league above them to see whether they stay in the Southern Premier Division One.
They will find out on Saturday, April 21, whether they will be relegated to Division Two after a difficult first season in the higher tier.
