Ladies unlucky to be empty-handed

A spirited Eastbourne Ladies side were left frustrated as they were beaten by Basingstoke on their return to league action.

They were off to a great start and were playing excellent hockey, attacking and defending well.

They found themselves trailing at half time, though, after a fluke goal by the home side.

After the break, Eastbourne produced some more superb hockey with fantastic saves from ‘keeper Sigsy, a near goal from Sally Clarke and excellent work rate from the whole side, especially Steph Black (Player of the Match) and helpful forward Emily Reed, relentless in her efforts.

With the unlucky loss of possession in the middle of the pitch, Basingstoke capitalised and took the opportunity for a breakaway goal, much to Eastbourne’s frustration.

They continued with real determination and came away empty-handed but with excellent spirit after matching the third-placed side on possession and match play.

They look forward to playing Worthing at the Saffron’s 1.30pm next Saturday.
