Goodwin fires Sussex to CB40 victory

SUSSEX concluded the Arundel Festival of Cricket with a comfortable win over Northamptonshire in CB40 Group C on Sunday (July 22).

Leaders Sussex won the toss, put bottom-of-the-table Northants into bat an then dismissed them for just 129 in 39.5 overs.

Amjad Khan and Kirk Wernars struck early as Northamptonshire were reduced to 9-3 in just 3.3 overs.

They had fallen to 46-6 by 17.1 overs, before Rob Keogh (30) and James Middlebrook put on 60 for the seventh wicket.

Middlebrook, who struck 37, then added 23 for the eighth wicket with Con de Lange before Northants’ last three wickets all fell with the score on 129.

Chris Liddle led the way for Sussex with 4-21, while Khan, Wernars and Scott Styris all took two wickets each.

Chris Nash (10) and Luke Wright (13) were both out inside 10 overs in Sussex’s reply to leave them 34-2.

But an unbroken 96-run third-wicket stand between Ed Joyce (37 not out) and Murray Goddwin (67 not out) took Sussex to victory with 57 balls remaining.

Goodwin struck six fours and one six from his 74-ball innings.
