Royal ease through to semi-finals of PAV Knockout plate
EASTBOURNE Royal face a plate semi-final clash with Pyecombe next month after seeing off Slinford in their third round tie at home.
After the morning foursomes were shared, wins by Mark Taylor and Matt Wilson, Nick Ward and Hamish Houston negated the losses by Steve Clarke and Phil Belfield and Alex Piper and Matt Bell,.
That left the Royal needING at least 4 1/2 points from theIR eight singles matches for victory.
Things went the way of the Royal at the outset; Matt Bell and Alex Piper got home 4&3 and 2&1 respectively.
Unusual losses by Matt Wilson and an unwell Nick Ward raised Slinfold’s hopes, but these were quickly dashed with a 6&5 win from Steve Clarke, followed by Hamish Houston’s 4&3 win.
Phil Belfield sealed the victory for the home side with his 6&5 win.
The icing on the cake was Mark Taylor’s halved game, giving the Royal a 7 1/2- 4 1/2 overall score and passage to the semi-final against Pyecombe on August 11 at a venue to be announced.
In the Exclusive Trophy quarter finals, having beaten Seaford Blatchington away and Ifield at home, Alan G. Smith’s largely unchanged squad set off to Hassocks with high hopes.
These were, sadly, quickly dashed!
The weather was wet and windy at times but the major factor in a 4-0 defeat was undoubtedly local knowledge.
Knowing where to drive was important but the excellent greens, with their links-style subtle borrows proved too much for the team of David Simmons & Alan F Smith, John Bateman & Noel Howcroft, Kevin Chamberlen & Colin Taylor, John Chamberlen and Eric Huke. The rules require a category 2 handicap player to be paired with a category 3 player.
