Penny’s dropping in handicap stakes!
PENNY VALENTINE continued her good form in the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club ladies Stableford to claim first place in Silver Division.
Valentine scored 41 points, a score which has seen her reduce her handicap by three. She now plays off 17. Bette Bailey finished second with 36 points, and Ann Hodgeton third with 34.
Gaye Hawgood won Bronze 1, beating Sue Weldon and Judy Horner who finished second and third respectively. Lyn Sweetman’s 40 points in Bronze 1 means her handicap is now 28.
Judy Ayling and Zoe Gurr were presented with the Aggregate Foursomes Cups, their best four rounds out of six totalling 130 points. Second place went to Alice Millset and Chris Horne with 127, and in third place was Sarah Emslie and Jan Smith with 121 points.
In the Men’s Drawn Stableford Division 1, Tony Springall’s 43 points means he was placed first. Stuart Alff was second with 42, and Matt Wilson third with 38. Mark Rayner also scored 43 in Division 2 to claim first spot, one better than John Sillence who had to settle for second place. Martin Wellings scored 39 to take third prize.
Nick Stubbs goes forward to play in the area final of the PGA pro-am qualifier alongside the club’s professional Alan Harrison, with the winner jetting off to Turkey for the final. Stubbs plays in Division 2, and recorded a net score of 62 points to beat Barry Chapman and David Parks. The first division produced a five-way tie at the top of the leaderboard, David Simmonds winning after a coutback split him from Robert Trott, John Bateman, Jordan Baker and Mike Dobell, who matched Simmonds’ 67. Division 3 was headed by Graham Watson on a score of 65 net, closely followed by Robin Coomber on 66 and Andrew Durrani on 68.
In the Mixed Stableford, the Rye Greensomes format was headed by Alistair and Sue Wadsworth with 43 Stableford points, just one better than Ken Macdonald and Lesley Williams, who had the better of Bob and Kate Salmon on countback.
AT Willingdon Golf Club Cynthia Passingham secured first place in the Thornley Qualifier in the ladies Silver Division, ahead of Val Seal in second, and Marie Hunt in third. Passingham scored an excellent gross 91, net 71. Seal settled for second with gross 86, net 72 and Hunt scored gross 92, net 72. In the Bronze A competition, Geraldine Walley claimed 1st place with a gross 102, net 77, finshing in front of Su Shanson who scored gross 101, net 80 and Carol Woods who scored gross 109, net 82. The Bronze B competition saw Maureen Periera claim victory with a gross score of 103, net 74. She beat off competition from Janet Price and Judith Pike who notched gross 111, net 78 and gross 115, net 79 respectively. The eight best medal scores of all the ladies who played will now go into a knock-out competition.
WILLINGDON Golf Club members took part in a Texas Scramble on Easter Monday, despite dubious bank holiday weather conditions.
The overall winners were Garry Jarvis, Grant Jarvis, Dean Jarvis and Calvin Jarvis with a net score of 53.9. In second place with a net score of 55.4 was Steve Wraight, John Payne, Brian Watkinson, and Ian Fletcher.
THE Reeve Salver, a mixed greensomes Stableford competition, was played in beautiful weather with the Willingdon Golf Club course in excellent condition.
Overall winners with 44 points were Rachel Sellence and Paul Hatt.
Runners-up were Max Cobbold and Mark Hurst with 43 points on the back nine from Vale Seal and Mark Killeen.
In the seniors’ Alistair Campbell Cup, a strokeplay competition, Reg Cork scored an excellent gross 95, nett 65, with his additional age related shots, to take the trophy. Runner-up was Gerry Best with a gross 85, nett 66.5 on the back nine from Brian Ellam with a gross 90, nett 66.5.
The Dennis Lovell winter mixed competition has been decided with Linda Foord and Don Adkins beating Gill Maynard and John Maynard in the final.
