79 blows wins Tolley for Nigel

Eastbourne Downs golfer Nigel Smith took the honours in the Tolley Salver.

Played in a challenging east wind which resulted in higher scores, Smith went round in 79 blows for a net 73.

Ex-Captain Barry Wooler (6) was second with a 74 on countback from Ross Jay.

The Gilbery Print Plate was won by Warren Poll (15) with an astounding performance in the conditions. He had an 83 net 68, with Richard Collier (18) net 73 second and Richard Simes (18) third also on 73.

In the Seniors Hymns Tankard, Terry Marsh (17) won with a steady stableford of 38. Ken Creagan (15) came through the trying conditions with a 36. Harold Knight (8) put together a steady 35.

The Henry Winder Cup Was won by Trevor Harrison (15) 36 with Mervyn Yates (15) 34 on countback to Derek Springall(13).

The course was in tip-top condition as Downs golfers challenged for the prestigious Members Cup

With a steady high wind and rough showing levels of difficulty unknown for 25 years, it was going to take a special effort to win.

Early starters Sam Smith and David Graham were joint leaders for most of the morning on one-under-par.

They were eventually pipped by “Sir” Neill Knight with an excellent +1 result against par in this bogey competition.

Smith and Graham shared second in this annual event.
