Eastbourne Town manager John Lambert says his unbeaten side are well and truly title contenders after they enjoyed back to back league victories against promotion rivals Horsham and Newhaven.

Despite missing the talents of regular first team starters Jack Turner, Jason Taylor, Dan Bowell and Andy Henson, Town recorded a 2-1 home triumph against Dominic Di Paola’s Horsham side.

Wes Tate opened the scoring for Lambert’s men on 22 minutes but Samir Hadi levelled just after the interval. With just 10 minutes remaining Kenny Pogue bagged his sixth league goal of the season with the crucial winner.

Town followed that up on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win against leaders Newhaven despite having Brett Patton sent off on the hour for two bookable offences. Town were already 2-0 up thanks to goals from Ben Billings and Pogue.

Lambert’s men are third in the table three points behind leaders Newhaven.

Tomorrow (Saturday) they have another tough test at six placed Loxwood - the team they beat last season to win the RUR Cup. Lambert said, “It has been a fantastic week and we couldn’t have asked anymore from the lads. Both Newhaven and Horsham were unbeaten and flying and we have gained maximum points, brilliant! People will say we are title contenders and they have to after those two results. But we are not getting carried away we know how quickly things can change. However, the lads have a great opportunity, I really feel this team can go places. The character in this side is absolutely unbelievable. We are there to be shot down now but the lads can deal with that, definitely.” Bowell and Taylor could be available for selection after recovering from injury but Henson and Turner, who has two broken toes, are expected to miss out.
