EASTBOURNE Town battled hard for a point in their 1-1 draw with Ramsgate in the Ryman Division One South match on Saturday at The Saffrons.

The point means Danny Bloor’s side stretch their unbeaten run to five games, and remain 10th in the league table.

Town started brightly with a short free-kick being played out to Sam Crabb. Crabb skipped past his man and his cross deflected into the path of his brother Nathan, who couldn’t keep his shot down.

Pascal Ebigbo was causing Town trouble down the right though, and Ramsgate twice went close from his good work. Then from a Mark Lovell effort, Kieron Thorp made a smart save down to his right.

Having threatened once before from a Luke Denton throw, Town eventually took the lead five minutes before the break. Denton’s launch was flicked on at the near post by Dean Brooks, and Scott Kirkwood followed up to smash in from five yards. Just before half-time, Town might have had a penalty but referee Adam Bakalarz waved away Nathan Crabb’s protests.

Town almost doubled their lead in the 52nd minute with what proved to be their best chance of the half. Nathan Crabb pick-pocketed Mitchell Sherwood on the edge of the box and cut inside, but his powerful strike was parried by Daren Hawks. The rebound fell to Danny Curd, but the ball bounced awkwardly and the striker couldn’t keep his effort down.

As the half continued, Ramsgate got back into the game and equalised through a Joe Taylor header which looped over Thorp following a deep cross from the left.

With ten minutes remaining, Ebigbo forced Thorp into another good save after a mazy dribble but when the Ramsgate man tried to get through again, Nick Fogden took a booking for his team to stop the winger in his tracks.

The home side almost stole the points in stoppage time but Steve May fired over from the edge of the box.

After the game, game, Bloor looked for the positives.. He said, “I’m disappointed, as we had chances to make it 2-0. But we live to fight another day and although we don’t always get it right every time at Eastbourne Town, we’re now five unbeaten.

“Matt Geard was on the bench today due to injury but being able to bring in a player who was playing in the Conference last year such as Nathan Crabb shows how well we are progressing.”
