Eastbourne Town’s relentless march towards the Southern Combination Premier League title continued as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory in a Bank Holiday Monday local derby against Eastbourne United at the Oval.
Town started well against Tobi Hutchinson’s United side and took the lead after just three minutes.
Jason Taylor intercepted a pass from a United defender and rolled the ball to Kenny Pogue at the far post who made no mistake and claimed his 11th league goal of the season.
United have made giant strides forward under manager Hutchinson this season and went into the match with only one defeat in their last six.
United, were organised, kept possession well but just could not break through a resolute Eastbourne Town rearguard. It was Town that almost added a second as Taylor struck the inside of the post following a scramble from a corner.
Town held on to record their 15th victory of the season and remain top of the table.
Next up for John Lambert’s side is a home fixture against AFC Uckfield at the Saffrons on Saturday, January 2. United will prepare for another local derby as they travel to Ian Stevens’ Hailsham Town. Hailsham’s game today at AFC Uckfield was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
