Eastbourne United AFC suffered their second cup defeat in the space of four days after a 2-0 defeat to Peacehaven & Telscombe on Wednesday night in the John O’Hara League Cup.
As with last Saturday’s defeat in the FA Vase at Dorking Wanderers, the scoreline didn’t completely the reflect the flow of the game.
United boss Paul Daubeney made two enforced changes to the starting XI from the FA Vase fixture due to unavailability.
Howard Davey and Mark Goodwin were absent and it paved the way for returns for Luke Denton and Shaun Lee, with the latter taking up an unfamiliar role at centre forward.
It was the worst possible start for United as they conceded a scrappy goal.
The returning Denton’s clearance cannoned off a Peacehaven player, ‘keeper Adam Sargent punt upfield found Callum Saunders who returned the ball into the unguarded net. Sargent saved well from a Ryan Bradley header while at the other end Baitup had a header cleared off the line from Gianluca Del-Gaudio’s cross.
United pressed forward after the break but the home side added a second from a rocket-like Charlie Walker header.
United remained committed and Del Gaudio, Catt and Jamie Bunn all went close but could not break the Peacehaven resistance.
