Eastbourne United AFC United almost left it too late to overcome their bogey side and progress to the next round of the division two cup, beating Mile Oak after extra time at the Oval.

Dominating from the start they could have been ahead through Ollie Lee, Pete Featherstone or Jamie Bunn before Mile Oak in their first telling attack took the lead when a shot from Kieran Howard was deflected past Adam Sargent by Tony Russell.

Worse was to come when seven minutes later a long throw from Howard seemed to catch the United defence napping and Paul Eaton headed home.

Featherstone was then switched back to his preferred position in the centre of defence and Mile Oak carried very little further threat as United set about retrieving the situation.

Callum Holles clipped the outside of the post and Peter Cooper shot wide with only the keeper Aaron Stenning to beat, Stenning was also fortunate to go unpunished for handling the ball outside the area.

The second half was much the same with chances going begging the best of which was blasted over the bar by Russell after two blocks on the line. James Gatensby replaced Holles soon to be followed by Dave Smart and Steve Stracey for Nick Barden and Bunn.

With the final minutes ticking away Cooper who worked tirelessly all afternoon made the most of an untidy challenge in the box and got up to convert the resulting penalty. One minute later Cooper turned provider in setting up Smart for the equaliser.

United continued to dominate extra time Gatensby and Russell both wasted clear chances and Cooper had an effort very well saved but from the resultant corner Shaun Lee popped up to turn in the winner to complete a well deserved comeback
