For those who want to add a little extra spice to their Christmas, a trip to Priory Lane for a rather tasty looking Boxing Day Sussex derby should be on the menu.

Eastbourne Borough versus Whitehawk always catches the eye, indeed Eastbourne Borough versus any team managed by Steve King adds a certain edge - the two together could be explosive.

Whitehawk, under King, narrowly missed out on promotion last season and this year they are once again in play-off contention.

A quick glance at the National South League table looks grim reading for Borough as they languish in 17th, 10 points adrift of the play-offs and just two above the drop zone. But closer inspection shows decent runs in the FA Trophy and FA Cup has seen them play two games less than many of the teams around them. If, and it’s a sizeable if, they can beat Whitehawk and claim six points from their games in hand, Widdrington’s men are back in the running for the top five.

“I can understand fans look at the table and think we are under-achieving,” Widdrington said. “But at the moment it’s not a true reflection. I keep saying to the lads not to look at the table just yet. We have games in hand and this period over Christmas is a great opportunity for us to pick up points.

“We have a massively busy schedule, not just Christmas, but all throughout January. Historically, we are at our best when the games arrive thick and fast. We find our rhythm and show our best form. Let’s get through this period and January and then see where we are at.”

Of Whitehawk, Widdrington added, “To be fair to them they are one of the best teams I have seen in this division. It’s a local derby and we are anticipating a great game of football.

“It’s a great match for our fans and also Brighton are away so they (Whitehawk)could well bring a few more. Hopefully it will be a good crowd with a good atmosphere.”

Lewis Carey and Craig Stone are available. Both were sent-off at Truro and will serve their one-match suspensions for the match at Whitehawk on Saturday, January 2. Borough are also in action at second placed Maidstone United on Monday, December 28.
