GARRY Wilson hailed Matt Smart’s wonder-strike as the ‘best he has seen’ and insisted it was better than Manyor Figueroa’s free-kick, voted last season’s Premier League goal of the season.

Match of the Day pundits drooled over the Wigan Athletic midfielder’s superb strike from inside his own half at the Britannia Stadium last year, but Wilson believes Smart’s 60-yard effort tops what some experts hailed as the best free-kick of all time.

“I looked a Figueroa’s goal again and I honestly believe Matt’s was better.

“Figueroa had the whole play in front of him and ran directly on to the ball.

“Matt was ahead of the ball and he had to come around to the right side before striking it.

“It was a fantastic piece of skill. “It shows the confidence is coming back into the side when players try things like that - mind you if he’d miss-hit it, he’d have got a good rollicking.”
