Tommy Widdrington refused to make excuses for his Eastbourne Borough men, instead insisting they need to ‘man up’ after their sixth defeat in seven matches.

The Sports’ form has plummeted after a bright start to the campaign and following a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Sutton, they now find themselves loitering in the Blue Square South relegation zone.

Widdrington, who admitted losing to a solitary 95th-minute strike the way they did was more painful than a 4-0 defeat, said, “I can’t make any excuses because that’s now four out of the last six games where we’ve been caught out by the last kick of a match that we should’ve taken something from.

“You can say if we’d scored that penalty in the third minute, it might have ended up different but it’s all ifs, buts and maybes.

“Things aren’t going well for us at the moment; we’re not getting the rub of the green but we need to man up about it.

“I think we’re just lacking a bit of quality and experience in certain areas and that’s something we’re working hard to improve.”

He added, “I’m bitterly disappointed for them. People like Ollie Rowe, Sam Cole and Ben Adelsbury worked their socks off today and deserved a clean sheet.

“I can’t knock the effort from any of the lads; they all ran for their shirt today. I haven’t ranted and raved at them at all, they did me proud today.

“Make no mistake though, I am going to squeeze everything I can out of every single one of them.”
