Eastbourne Town continue to target a fourth place finish as they head to Hassocks tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

Town are sixth in the Southern Combination Premier on 48 points with Pagham fourth on 53 and Eastbourne United fifth with 53 points.

Town assistant Jamie Podmore said, “Looking at the league table, that remains a realistic target for us.

“The top three will battle it between themselves but fourth place is still there for the taking.

“We did have a poor start but if we can end the season in fourth that would be a fairly decent effort.”

Podmore admits the players were disappointed not to claim all three points from their last league fixture against Littlehampton at the Saffrons last Saturday.

Town started poorly as they went 1-0 down and were also grateful to keeper Greg Nessling who save a penalty. They fought their way back into the match thanks to Evan Archibald’s 23rd goal of the season. A sublime 40 yard lob from Aaron Capon handed the hosts a 2-1 advantage but Ross McKay levelled the scores thanks to a close range effort at the back post following a corner. Podmore added, “We started poorly but full credit to the lads they forced their way back into the match. We got our noses in front but caught us out just after the break.

“We camped in their half for most of the second half but we never really did enough to take the three points.”

Tomorrow’s opponents Hassocks are 13th in the league standings but they have claimed some excellent results this season. None more so than last time out at the Beacon when they shocked leaders Shoreham with a 4-1 victory.

“They have some excellent players,” added Podmore. “And when they click they can produce great performances and great results.

“Similar to the Saffrons, the Beacon is a nice place to go.

“You know the facilities are good and the pitch is normally good. They are a nice bunch over there but having said all that, we want to go there and take all three points. If we are at our best, we are capable of doing that.”

Callum Sherrif returns but Chris Cumming-Bart is unavailable for selection.
