PAUL DAUBENEY and his team are ready and raring to go as they prepare to kick off their new season when they welcome Storrington to The Oval this Saturday.

United have finished a tough but relatively successful pre-season and must now get back to business as their Sussex County Football League Division Two campaign gets under-way this weekend.

Boss Daubeney said, “We’re all ready and dying for it to get started to be honest.

“We’ve had a hard pre-season against lots of higher-level clubs but now we’re raring to go.

“Promotion is the aim this year and I think we’ve got a good chance of achieving it as long as we stay injury-free.”

United played six pre-season friendlies, five of which were against teams in higher tiers than themselves.

They came away with three wins, against Sidley United, Buxted and Eastbourne Borough XI while their defeats, all of which were relatively narrow, came to Brighton and Hove Albion XI, Eastbourne Town and Walton Casuals.

The side will be encouraged by that and will hope to use it to build on last season, when they just missed out on promotion to Division One alongside rivals Hailsham Town.

Daubeney has added three new faces to his squad this year in the shape of Callum Sheriff from Brighton and Hove Albion, Matt Godley from St Francis and John Summerbell from Seaford Town. However, he may not stop there.

He said, “I only have about a 20-man team so far but I’m keeping my squad quite slim at the moment with a view to include a few more players come September time.

“A few players become available then after not being able to find a club or settle in so hopefully we can attract a few more players, maybe some from a higher level.

“There are a few positions I am looking to strengthen.”

United will be without three players on Saturday as Steve Stracey and Jamie Bunn are unavailable while new signing John Summerbell is sidelined with a calf injury, although it is not thought to be serious.
