Eastbourne United’s adventure in the Sussex Senior Cup is over despite a Liam Baitup hat-trick as United pushed Ryman side Bognor all the way at a very wet and windy Oval on Tuesday night.
United were looking to claim a second Ryman League scalp after defeating Lewes in the previous round and started magnificently when Goodwin crossed for Liam Baitup to head home past former Eastbourne Borough ‘keeper Nick Jordan with just two minutes played.
Baitup, playing as a lone striker, rattled Jordan’s crossbar minutes later before Bognor pulled level on the half-hour when Ashley-Paul Robinson struck home past Adam Sargent from just outside the area.
Shaun Lee came close to restoring United’s lead but his 30 yard effort whistled past the post but it was Baitup who got his second of the evening when he slid home after 35 minutes.
Bognor, who are fifth in the Ryman Premier League pulled level again just two minutes later when Portsmouth loanee Dan Thompson fired home from the edge of the area.
Bognor took the lead on 41 minutes when Robinson got his second from the penalty spot and extended their lead through Jordan Clarke.
United’s never say die attitude paid off on 70 minutes when Steve Stracey played inBaitup to complete his fourth hat-trick of the season.
Baitup and Bunn both had chances to equalise but Bognor held firm to progress.
