Baitup too sharp for Steyning

Liam Baitup

Liam Baitup

Liam Baitup made it eight goals from the opening two fixtures as United maintained their 100 per cent start with a 4-2 victory over Steyning Town.

United handed a debut to Luke Denton in midfield while there were returns to the starting XI for Howard Davey and Jamie Bunn in the absence of Mark Goodwin, Gianluca Del-Gaudio and Simon Catt.

The game sprung to life on 17 minutes as Baitup got his first of the afternoon as he connected with a teasing cross from the byline by Shaun Lee to head home unmarked at the back post.

The lead was doubled on 20 minutes as the marauding Pete Featherstone stormed into the box and danced past a Steyning defender before pulling the ball back for Baitup to fire home.

United made it 3-0 after just 27 minutes with Baitup completing his second consecutive hat-trick as he reacted quicker than the Steyning defence to see his shot squirm under Steyning ‘keeper Whittington following a short corner from Nick Barden that was played into the box by the impressive Denton.

With two minutes of the first half remaining, Baitup emulated his efforts of last week and scored his fourth as the ball fell kindly to the striker as he fired home into the roof of the net.

The second half began with Steyning beginning to take a hold on the game and got their reward on 48 as the lively Phillip Williamson headed home following a left wing cross to make it 4-1.

The deficit was reduced to two goals as a poor clearance from Adam Sargent fell to Sonny Williamson who slotted home.

United: Sargent, Lee, Featherstone, Jules (Summerbell), Sherriff, Denton, Bunn, Davey, Cooper, Baitup (Godly), Barden, (Stracey)

Attendance: 98
