A rude division two wake up call for United

Disappointing would be an under statement to describe this performance.

After an encouraging start when United moved the ball about well, Storrington took the lead after 10 minutes when Richard Ayres got behind Dan Starnes and crossed for Liam Humphries to send a soft header just inside the post from ten yards.

United then lost their way and the defence looked particularly fragile as Luke Jearum, Kristian Harding and Craig Grantham were all presented with chances they failed to take.

It was no surprise when Storrington added a second when Shaun Lee failed to clear his lines and Grantham toe poked beyond keeper Ray Collier.

Ben Putland did fire one shot over the bar before limping off with a groin strain to be replaced by Wayne Davey.

Callum Holles did work an opening but also shot too high and Steve Stracey saw an effort destined for the top corner tipped around the post by the agile Geoff Elliott.

Collier had to be equally agile to turn a 30 yard drive from Chris Watton away.

Following a double substitution at half time, Rory Newby for Starne and Caolan O’Rielly for Stracey, United began to enjoy more possession but the final ball was poor as were many crosses, those that did get into the danger area were met with a distinct lack of desire and determination.

Holles and Tony Russell were both yellow carded for comments made to the referee before Storrington’s Jearum exploited a gaping hole down United’s left to cross for Grantham to send a looping header beyond the reach of Collier.

Ayres ran through yet another gaping hole to net the fourth before Gawaine Archibald saw yellow for confronting Iain Jarvie after his own brother, Evan, had committed the foul. With minutes remaining Davey linked with O’Reilly who saw his effort cleared off the line and Marcus Whiteman finally got in an accurate cross that picked out Russell who headed into the corner of the net.

United will hopefully now realise that they will have to do more than just turn up to get results in this division and there is an awful lot of hard work to be done if they are to become a force to be reckoned with.
