Wasteful Town made to pay by ex-player Kirkwood

Ex-Eastbourne Town player, Scott Kirkwood, came back to haunt his former side on Saturday to send Town to their fourth successive defeat.

Kirkwood’s first half goal was enough to give Sussex neighbours, Worthing, all three points against a wasteful Eastbourne Town.

The home side dominated possession for large parts of the game but failed to take any of their chances.

Danny Bloor’s men were back in action after a week off, as their game against Sittingbourne was postponed.

Town started confidently as Danny Curd and Kenny Pogue, had chances to give the home side the lead but neither could hit the target with their early efforts. The best chance came a quarter of hour in, full-back John Lansdale skipped past one challenge before sending over the type of cross strikers love, but Pogue could only head wide, when unmarked at the far post.

Bloor’s side were made to pay for their missed chances when the away side took the lead, totally against the run of play, in the 18th minute.

A deep cross to the far post was headed back across goal, past Town keeper Pelling, by Jamie Brotherton, where former Town midfielder, Scott Kirkwood, was on hand to tap home the simplest of chances.

A full length save from Pelling just seconds later stopped Town falling further behind,

On 68 minutes the ball fell kindly on the edge of the box for substitute Trevor Mcreadie, but his left foot shot was hit straight at Worthing goalkeeper, Jamie Banasco-Zaragoza.

With time running out the away side then missed a golden chance of their own to put the game beyond doubt.

Tom Lawley, found himself clean through on goal with only Pelling to beat but he could only roll his shot wide of the post.

Eastbourne Town: Pelling, Lansdale, Elliott (Geard), Austin, Fogden, May, Greenfield, Strevett (Lockyer), Curd, Pogue (McCreadie), Crabb.
