Divided FA Cup loyalties at Slough for uncle Eric

When Slough Town was drawn out of the hat for Eastbourne Town’s next FA Cup encounter, there was an underlying reason for Chairman David Jenkins to smile.
For David, the tie has a family connection as his uncle, Eric Collins, has been a supporter of Slough for an incredible 66 years.
Collins, who’s 92 years old, started watching the club when he left the Royal Navy in April 1946.
Born just outside the town, Eric still drives to most of Slough’s home matches and, up until last year, frequently attended away games too.
And he will be present for the visit of Eastbourne Town this Saturday as they meet in the FA Cup second round qualifying.
David said, “He’s 92 and still going strong. He’s fantastic really and quite a character.
“Slough have had a few problems in the past with bankruptcy and moving grounds, so when you think he’s stuck with them through thick and thin, it’s incredible.
“There’s about six of us, including my mum who’s nearly 80 herself, going up to the match and we’ll just be really pleased to see him. It will be a nice day for all the family.
“It’s a nice bit of friendly family rivalry and we don’t take it too seriously. We’re both really looking forward to it.”
