Widdrington: Everybody there knows we should’ve won that match
Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington admitted his side’s opening-day defeat to Dorchester was ‘hard to swallow’ after they conceded two late goals to leave Dorset empty-handed, despite putting in the better performance.
Borough had dominated the game for the first 80 minutes but two late goals for the home side wiped out James Walker’s earlier strike and denied the Sports three points from the opening match of the Blue Square Bet South 2012/2013 campaign.
Widdrington said, “It’s difficult not to be pleased with what I saw. We dominated the game, they had ten times fewer chances than us, and everyone here today will realise we should’ve got the three points.
“I’m not going to dress it up – we lost and obviously we’re gutted, but I’m not going to rant and rave at the lads. They know that if they were responsible for one of the goals, they need to look at themselves and address that but there are a lot of positives that we can take from today.”
One of those positives would be the performance of young Josh Scowen, who created problems for the home side throughout the 90 minutes.
“We have a great group of players here at the moment and I thought Josh was outstanding today. My team selection may have surprised a few people with Ademeno and Shepherd starting on the bench but they made an impact when they came on.
“The late goals were nothing to do with our fitness. If anything, perhaps it was a bit of naivety trying for a second goal when we didn’t need one.”
