Name: Thomas Widdrington
Born in: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England
Born on: October, 1971 (40 years old)
Career: A midfielder by trade, he made over 400 appearances, gracing all 92 stadiums in the Football League.
He began as a trainee at Southampton, staying with them for six seasons (1990 - 1996) and making 75 appearances, scoring three goals.
Grimsby Town signed him for a £300,000 transfer fee and he stayed there for three seasons. (1996-1999)
Although Grimsby were relegated in Widdrington’s first season, they were promoted the following season via the play-offs.
Grimsby won the Football League Trophy in 1998 but Widdrington missed the final due to injury. He made 89 appearances and scored eight goals.
Port Vale signed him on a free transfer at the end of the 1998-99 season. He stayed there for two seasons, making 82 appearances and scoring eight goals.
He was sent off on the last game of the 98-99 season and then got another red card in the first minute of his return to action. He won the Football League Trophy with Port Vale in 2001 but again, missed the final. He won Port Vale’s Player of the Year award in 2000.
Hartlepool: He enjoyed a successful two seasons at Hartlepool, winning promotion with them in the 2002-2003 season. He made 56 appearances between 2001 and 2003, scoring five goals.
Macclesfield: Widdrington joined Macclesfield in 2003 and stayed at the club until 2005. He captained the team during the 2004-05 season and made 58 appearances.
Port Vale: He rejoined Port Vale on a non-contract basis in 2005 but only played six times.
Salisbury: He joined Salisbury in 2005 and scored two goals in 46 appearances.
He was a Southern Football League Premier Division winner in 2006 and Conference South play-off winner in 2007.
In 2009, he took the role as manager of the club however, in 2010, he left the club when they were expelled from the National Conference for going into administration.
He then spent brief spells as assistant manager of Southend and manager of Hemel Hempstead Town.
Random fact: In 2007, while with Salisbury, Widdrington was involved in a touchline incident with Rushden & Diamonds boss Garry Hill. Hill headbutted Widdrington, consequently breaking Widdrington’s nose and earning himself a £1,500 fine and ten match touchline ban. Widdrington also received a fine and was banned from Nene Park when the two clubs met again later that season.
