Eastbourne Borough v Boreham Wood 17/09/11 celebrating after Matt Crabb's second goal

THREE points is the most important thing, claims Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington as they face mid-table Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Borough look set to return to action after three consecutive postponements when they travel to Meadow Park this weekend.

Widdrington, who has yet to watch his team in competitive action since taking charge, insists getting a result is the main aim heading into the match.

“Obviously I’d like to play Barcelona-esque football every week but that’s not going to happen.

“The performance is important too but at the end of the day we need those points and that’s what we head into the match looking to take out of it.”

Boreham, like Eastbourne, have been on a slump of late and head into the match on the back of seven defeats in nine matches.

Despite this, Widdrington is not considering the match an easy test.

“We like to think every game is winnable, but they probably think the same thing. Form goes out the window come 3pm on Saturday.

“I will put out a team that I think has a chance of winning the match and we’ll go into it prepared with our game plan.

“It’s two teams against each other and they will both have their moments in the game.

“We just need to try and have more of those key moments and generally that’ll be enough to help you win the game.”

Widdrington was hoping to send someone to watch Boreham Wood during their mid-week fixture, but traffic accidents on the M25 prevented this from materialising.

“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t send who we wanted to up there but I hope to talk to some managers of other teams who’ve played them recently instead.”

Eastbourne Borough will definitely be without four of their influential players as Carl Rook and Carl Masters are both suspended while Ben Austin and Gary Charman remain on the recovery table for the foreseeable future.

“Gary Hart is back from injury now but him, and a few others, have had colds, flu and stomach upsets.

“Some of them are carrying small knocks as well, so I don’t know who’s going to be available come Saturday but we’ll work with the hand we’re dealt.”

Widdrington will be hoping that none of these minor injuries prove problematic as his team head into an exceptionally busy period come the start of March, when they face six consecutive weeks with a Saturday and a mid-week fixture.

“That period will highlight the need to infuse some new faces into the squad.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve been tirelessly looking to attract players to the club but it’s hard when we’ve not been playing matches.

“I’m hoping to bring in two or three new players as soon as possible and if, financially, that means some others have to leave then so be it.”

Eastbourne’s postponed fixtures have all been rearranged, with the match against Sutton United due to take place on Tuesday, March 13, and the Thurrock game now to be played on Tuesday, March 27. Borough’s clash with Dartford has been rearranged for Tuesday, April 3.
