Eastbourne Borough boss Tommy Widdrington is ‘more than happy’ with what he has seen from his players since joining the club earlier this month.

Widdrington has yet to watch his men in competitive action due to weather postponements, but insists he is already impressed with what he’s seen on the training ground.

“Every single player has expressed an interest to be involved and to improve the club. Everyone’s pulling in the same direction to help the cause and turn this club around.

“We had a match against the reserves earlier this week and the effort and endeavour was all there, there’s just a lack of confidence, a lack of direction.”

Widdrington may have to wait a little bit longer before he can make his mark in the league though, as Saturday’s match with Thurrock is already in doubt.

With the Priory Lane pitch still under a couple of inches of snow, Boro’s third consecutive match could fall victim to the freezing conditions - something which frustrates their eager boss.

“I’m itching to get started now. I can’t get points until I play matches, but we have to be patient and prepare the players as best we can for when we do get to play.”

With the postponements allowing Ben Austin, Gary Hart and Gary Charman more time to return to fitness, and with Widdrington looking to seal the deal on a couple of new signings, the former Salisbury manager could have his options wide open when selecting his first starting line-up.

“The players have to show me they’ve got something individual to offer, something that I can use to help us win.

“There’s a need to improve the general solidity of the team.

“We need to be tougher, more methodical. I like to win and I need to bring that mentality into my dressing room.”

Eastbourne have been training at the David Lloyd centre and other local facilities this week following the bad weather, and so have yet to train together on grass.

“It is frustrating but the local community have been excellent allowing us to train at such short notice. I’m delighted with all the help I’m getting here at the club and from those around it.”

In regards to Bailo Camara, Widdrington said, “He’s not in contract so he’s welcome to go if he wants to, but I have said I feel he should stay here. I would include him in my plans, but it’s his decision.”
